In a swift operation, Singapore police arrested two foreign nationals within just 60 minutes for allegedly shoplifting from luxury stores in Changi Airport's transit area.
The dramatic incident unfolded on June 2 when authorities received an urgent alert at 2:25pm about a suspected theft at Terminal 3's Departure Transit zone. According to police reports, a designer purse had mysteriously disappeared from the high-end Furla boutique.
Airport Police Division officers sprang into action, reviewing security camera footage that led them to two Indian women travelers aged 29 and 30. In a race against time, authorities intercepted the suspects before they could board their departing flight.
"The quick response by our officers prevented these suspects from leaving the country," a police spokesperson commented. Further searches revealed more stolen merchandise - including premium perfume and an expensive black haversack - taken from another retail outlet in the airport complex.
The recovered items totaled S$635 in value, with all goods being brand new with tags still attached. Both women now face serious legal consequences for their alleged shopping spree through Changi's retail paradise.
Scheduled to appear in court on June 10, the accused could potentially receive maximum penalties under Singapore law - including seven years imprisonment or substantial fines - if convicted of theft in dwelling charges.
The case highlights both Changi Airport's sophisticated security measures and Singapore's zero-tolerance approach towards retail crime, even within its busy international transit zones where thousands pass through daily without incident.
