do not let guys like Dave Ramsey shame you about your debt most people have it and his snowball method actually makes you pay more over time let me explain Dave likes to use something called the debt snowball which is where you make minimum payments across all of your debt but then pay down the smaller balances first and move on to the larger balances and I prefer a debt avalanche which is where you make minimum payments across all of your debt so earlier on you're mentioning about debt consolidation could you help us understand a bit about the whole process of paying down a debt but is it like a legal procedure or you have to do it on your own how does it work so there's two ways the do it on your own way of course means literally you just cut up your card so you don't spend but no one is overlooking you right like uh that's true that's true so you need a lot of discipline Lah which is why uh in Singapore there's you're a Canadian and you're in debt what are your options well let's go through them here in my debt reduction option series here's part 1 let's talk about debt consolidation now it's usually not part of your vocabulary unless you have multiple debts that you're trying to pay off take out a new loan to pay off all those smaller debts such as credit card balances personal loans and other unsecured debts and then you end up with just one monthly payment to make let's check out some options and break them down most of the big banks and credit unions in Canada offer debt consolidation loans to their customers these debt consolidation companies they're doing what you could do yourself anyways they're like you said like you just told me they're they're telling you to default not make payments on these accounts until they get sent to collections right once they're in collections then they're gonna try to settle settle yeah settle for less than what you owe and then they're gonna charge you a percentage of uh however much they save you right I mean once those accounts go to collections you literally can do the same thing yourself how can individuals effectively manage multiple debts debt consolidation offers a viable solution by combining all outstanding debts into a single loan individuals can simplify their repayment process and potentially reduce their interest rates there are various strategies for debt consolidation including personal loans balance transfers and home equity loans it is important to assess each option carefully considering factors such as interest rates fees and repayment terms okay yes major props to anybody paying down their credit card debt it can feel really overwhelming but I also want to make sure you're not doing it wrong credit cards typically have very high interest rates anywhere between 20 to 30% APR meaning it's nearly impossible to out hustle the amount of interest you have to pay for example say you have $6455 in credit card debt like the average American if your credit card had a 25% APR and you made the minimum monthly payment of $35 a month have you heard of the hack to pay off your mortgage faster and invest at the same time I have not so let's say you have a 500000 dollar mortgage for the home that you live in and you have 100000 dollars to invest in shares because you live in your property the interest you pay isn't tax deductible but here's where it gets interesting let's say you use that 100000 dollars to repay your home loan then you'll have a 400 thousand dollar mortgage and 100000 dollars worth of equity you can then withdraw that 100000 dollars worth of equity and use it to invest in shares so if you're consolidating which one do you pay off most people would say the credit card because it hurts the credit score more to carry a high balance on a credit card but from a debt ratio standpoint paying off the car loan gives you more breathing room that's why you can't just throw money at the loudest problem you have to ask questions like what's the actual monthly impact on GDS and TDS to the way I use the funds consider debt consolidation through a personal loan how it works is you apply for a personal loan at a bank they give you a lump sum of money at a lower interest rate than your credit card usually 7 to 15% and then you use that money to pay off your credit card debt while limiting any further credit card spending then you just pay back the personal loan instead this way the money you pay towards your debt actually goes towards clearing it versus just keeping the interest at bay is debt consolidation a good idea okay before we get into this let's define what we're talking about a lot of people get debt consolidation mixed up with other terms like debt settlement or debt relief it is not that a debt consolidation basically is for example let's say you had five credit cards you owe $10000 you go get a loan an installment loan for $10000 pay off those five credit cards consolidate it into one loan hopefully with a much lower interest rate
