Shocking scenes unfolded at Johor Bahru's bustling KSL City Mall over the weekend when a section of the ceiling suddenly gave way, sending shoppers scrambling for safety. The dramatic incident, captured in multiple viral videos, occurred on Saturday evening (March 8), according to reports from Malaysian media outlets Oriental Daily and China Press.
Social media platforms Xiaohongshu and TikTok were flooded with footage showing the aftermath of the collapse near a mall escalator. The videos reveal several kiosks buried under debris, with twisted metal frames from the false ceiling hanging precariously or lying scattered across the floor.
"It happened so suddenly," described one eyewitness who shared footage on Xiaohongshu. "Thankfully everyone reacted quickly and no one was hurt." This account was corroborated by other social media users who confirmed there appeared to be no injuries despite the frightening scene.
The affected area was immediately cordoned off as mall security and staff rushed to assess the damage. One particularly striking video shows how some kiosks bore direct impacts from falling ceiling materials, though their operators reportedly escaped unharmed.
Authorities have launched investigations into what caused the structural failure. Larkin Fire Station chief Mohd Suhaimi Abdul Jamal told The Star that as of Sunday morning, no official reports had been filed regarding the incident. JB southern district police chief Raub Selamat similarly confirmed that while police are looking into matter proactively, they haven't received any formal complaints.
The popular shopping destination located just 10 minutes from JB checkpoint regularly attracts crowds of Singaporean visitors drawn by its retail offerings and entertainment options. Regular patrons expressed surprise at news of structural issues in what many consider one of Johor Bahru's premier malls.
